Redevelopment of Central Elementary School Site in City Heights

During Spring 2015 the class developed highest and best use land development proposals for the re-use of the Central Elementary school site in City Heights, which is scheduled to be vacated by the local school district within the next three years.   Goals of the redevelopment study included determining highest and best land us scenarios that support the goals of the community while demonstrating financial feasibility. Community and economic development as a social movement is a reaction against the traditions of “urban renewal” as practiced in large American cities in the middle of the 20th century.  At the heart of community development practices are principles of social and economic justice.  Theories of sustainability and social equity were introduced in the course and used a lens through which to evaluate both existing conditions and project proposals
