Topic: Actualizing Organizational Hybridity: The Promise and Peril of the L3C
Description: Trends in nonprofit commercialization and other market-based approaches to providing social services have been increasing. Various forms of hybrid organizations seek to blend this market-based approach with social missions. That is, in addition to a profit-maximizing orientation, the organization has a social mission to improve existing conditions among society’s vulnerable populations, creating a double (and sometimes triple) bottom line. The L3C (or low-profit limited liability company) is one such organization that has emerged, that has largely been examined by legal scholars, and is now gaining traction among social and behavioral researchers. Professor Ronquillo will discuss his work in this area, including results from a survey he developed, as well as primary and secondary qualitative data to gain insights on what the future may hold for this unique legal structure of an organization.
Bio: John C. Ronquillo is Assistant Professor of Nonprofit and Public Management at the University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs where he teaches courses in social entrepreneurship, and organizational management and behavior. His research focuses on the management of social enterprises, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies, with a specific interest in organizational innovation. Ronquillo is a graduate of Arizona State University, earned his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, and previously served on the faculty of DePaul University in Chicago.
