Kalin G. Sims is a second year graduate student seeking to obtain her Master’s in Nonprofit Leadership and Management as well as a Graduate Certificate of Social Justice. Simply put, Kalin is passionate about serving underserved communities because she believes everyone should have access to a quality life. Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Kalin’s adventurous mindset has given her the opportunity to live in different places such as Atlanta, Japan and now, Los Angeles. In 2015, as a graduate of Stony Brook University, she committed to two years of service with Americorps in Atlanta, Georgia at Hands on Atlanta where her interest in the Nonprofit sector blossomed. Serving at L.A. Works as a VISTA leader for her third and final Americorps term, she led professional and personal development meetings for over 15 VISTA members as well as implemented sustainable volunteer engagement practices for large days of service.
Kalin believes through the unique curriculum of this program, once complete, she will possess a holistic understanding of Nonprofits, Foundations, and all that exist in-between, but most importantly how they operate. This summer, she had an opportunity to intern at the Green Foundation, in which she assisted with leading site visits for potential grantees, while learning how to master reading LOIs and proposals from the foundation perspective. In addition to academia, Kalin is the Black Graduate Student Network’s new Director of Event Operations, which she will use her role to connect graduate students through campus events and initiatives. Although she is a champion of youth empowerment, her interest in homelessness and philanthropy has grown tremendously. Upon graduating in May of 2019, Sims will continue to make strides toward accomplishing her goal of holding the position of CEO for a Nonprofit centered around overall youth development.
