Topic: Close-ups and the Scale of Ecology – Land Uses and Neighborhood Crime
Description: This talk examines the ongoing challenge of understanding the spatial scale of various social and physical processes, the role of land uses, and the consequences of these for neighborhood crime. In this talk, I discuss two interrelated papers that stem from a large-scale interdisciplinary project. Using data from several cities from across the US, the first paper suggests a multiscale approach is necessary when examining neighborhoods and crime. The second paper builds on this work by examining how parks have consequences for neighborhood crime. The results suggest a need to consider the broader social and physical context that neighborhoods are embedded.
Bio: Adam Boessen is an assistant professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. He received his Ph.D. in Criminology, Law and Society from the University of California, Irvine in 2014.
